“Home Living Redefinied” - the slogan of a new modern furniture store in Louisville, Kentucky called Habitation. I recently had the opportunity to sit down with store owner David Mont to discuss with him his new retail venture.
David has a long history of successful retail stores, beginning in 1999 with a modern furniture store, also in Louisville, called Fusion Home. After being open for 8 1/2 years, David decided to close the doors of Fusion Home in April of 2008 to make way for other ventures.
Habitation opened to the public in November of 2008 with a wonderful line up of mid century modern furniture lines such as Gus Modern, a Toronto, Canada-based, eco-friendly furniture company noted for their clean, simple lines and industrial influences, as well as the Vermont-based Copeland Furniture and Sedia Furniture. Habitation has hand picked each and every furniture manufacturer they represent based on the quality of products and the ethics of each company - the more self-sustaining the better.
Habitation has also done its part for the environment, basing their retail model and corporate philosophy on being good stewards of the community, and being green. Green as a company and making green options available to their customers. Habitation has a line of furniture exclusive to the company on display in the showroom with “Eco Sensitive Upholstery”, which is 100% natural cotton which has been hand dyed in vegetable dye. Attention has been given to every detail of the construction process, including the exposed, sustainably-harvested legs of the upholstered furniture, which are left unfinished to keep from polluting the air with harmful fumes and chemicals.
Even in the construction of the showroom Habitation was thinking green. “We used recycled lighting {from a former store}, bamboo floors, low VOC paint, and mats of recycled tires” boasts Mont. David is very proud of being able to offer a wide variety of eco-friendly home furnishings to the public, as it can sometimes be difficult to find attractive furniture that fits within the budget and is good to the environment.
Habitation has a complimentary Interior Design service available for any customer who would like professional decorative advice, as well as a resource center of 500+ different fabrics which can be ordered for the line of furniture exclusive to Habitation.
Habitation is planning two additional retail locations for 2009; one in Cincinnati, Ohio, and the other in Nashville, Tennessee.
